On January 21, 1839, several of his men landed on a small islet a few hundred meters offshore and claimed all the land they had seen for France. He does note, however, that the Indian population grew ever more numerous as they traveled downriver, and how the Spaniards attacked and burned the villages, and killed any Indians that did not flee. Portuguese explorers such as Gil Eanes, Nuno Tristão, and Alvise da Cada Mosto had explored down the western coast of Africa in the 1430s, 1440s, and 1450s, respectively. One native man asks another: “Are they intelligent?” with the other answering definitively and without hesitation, “No.”[24] It is Beresford’s objective to challenge the myth of the superior Europeans and the uncivilized Indians. The Spanish conquest in the Americas brought an influx of new money into European commerce, introduced new peoples, products, and ideas to European culture while wreaking devastation on indigenous cultures in the "New World." 1) What motivations did Prince Henry the Navigator have for sponsoring Portugal's first voyages of exploration along the African coast? 1) Identify (list) all of the intended and unintended consequences of Columbus' voyages of discovery on Europe and the New World? 2) What factors allowed the Spanish conquistadores Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro to conquer, respectively, the Aztec Empire of Montezuma II and the Inca Empire of Atahualpa? 1) For Spain, by the mid-16th century, what provided the chief source of metallic wealth from its mining operations? 2) What were the functions of the hacienda and the plantation in Spanish Latin America and the Caribbean? 1) Identify and describe each of the four distinct stages of European contact with the rest of the world, as described by Kagan, since the time of the Renaissance. 2) Why were Europeans able to exert political dominance over much of the rest of the world for nearly four-and-one-half centuries before 20th century decolonization? 3) Spain, Britain, France, and the Netherlands were the dominant European imperial powers of the 18th century.

Another of the first images beamed back from NASA's Curiosity rover on August 6, 2012, is the shadow cast by the rover on the surface of Mars. He did not see the straits afterwards discovered by Hudson, but, finding an inlet farther north, he sailed some hundred miles, in the firm belief that this was the passage for which he was searching, that America lay on his left and Asia on his right. In late 1997, Texaco sold its entire interest of 30% and transferred the role of operator to Premier.

Space tourism companies such as Virgin Galactic, Space Adventures, SpaceX, Boeing, Bigelow Aerospace, and Blue Origins hope to offer space travel opportunities in the near future. The history of petroleum exploration around the world is colorful and fascinating. But an awful lot of it felt like an update to what I learned in 5th grade about the great explorers. The Americas would later be named after Amerigo Vespucci, a fellow Italian explorer who argued, correctly, that Columbus had discovered a new land.
