Amphibian crafts are popular among children. Some amphibians, however, are entirely aquatic, never leaving the water at any stage of their lives. Reptiles (including birds!) are amniotes; that is, their eggs are protected from dessication and other environmental problems by an extra membrane, the amnion, not found in the first terrestrial vertebrates (amphibians). He has always been very passive and non-behavioral, however, this past year he has been a pest, he paces around our back door, and will scratch up against it repeatedly, literally for hours, he rams my large flower pots and will push them, and has broken a few forcing himself behind these very heavy large pots that are against a wall.

The Mexican Burrowing Toad is said to be the most evolutionary distinct species of amphibian, with, it is estimated, 190 million years of independent evolutionary history. We have a variety of issues above and beyond the standard breed discriminatory laws that may be in place, and at times we do not have the ability to help because our hands are legally tied. Hence, in many species, the mucous glands common in all amphibians have evolved to produce a bitter-tasting poison. Most amphibians lay eggs, which hatch into larvae and undergo an amazing transformation (or metamorphosis) as they move from larval to adult stages.

These reptiles are so fast I had to resort to taking this photo with the skink in a jar. This is our only siren that readily inhabits open water situations such as lakes and rivers, though it can be found in smaller bodies of water and wetlands. I wish its shell wasn't so overgrown with algae. Information on this resource appears at the end of this presentation. Developing animal collection policies, procedures and training manuals in collaboration with the Director of Animal Health and Welfare and Curatorial staff.
